Drift Detection with Scalr vs Manual Approaches: A Practical Comparison

Drift detection for Terraform can range from a shell script running terraform plan on a cron schedule to a fully integrated platform that monitors every workspace in your organization. The approach you choose shapes how quickly you catch drift, how much operational overhead you carry, and whether your team actually trusts the results enough to act on them.

The Manual Approach: terraform plan on a Schedule

The most common manual approach uses terraform plan -detailed-exitcode wrapped in a shell script, triggered by cron or a CI/CD scheduled pipeline. It works — exit code 2 means drift exists, and you can wire that up to Slack or PagerDuty.

What You Have to Build and Maintain

The shell script is the easy part. The hard part is everything around it:

Credential management. Every drift check needs valid cloud provider credentials. For AWS, that means IAM roles or access keys for each account. For multi-cloud setups, you’re managing credentials across AWS, Azure, GCP, and whatever else you run. These credentials need rotation, and if they expire, your drift detection silently stops working.

State locking. When your drift detection script runs terraform plan, it acquires a state lock. If a developer triggers a real plan at the same time, one of them fails. At scale, this contention becomes a real problem — your drift checks start interfering with production deployments.

Per-workspace configuration. Each Terraform workspace needs its own script invocation with the right backend config, variable files, and provider configuration. Adding a new workspace means updating your drift detection setup. Teams inevitably forget, and new workspaces go unmonitored.

Alerting and reporting. A cron job that prints “DRIFT DETECTED” to a log file isn’t actionable. You need to parse the plan output, send structured alerts, track which workspaces have unresolved drift, and give someone a way to act on the findings. This is effectively building a dashboard from scratch.

Maintenance. Terraform CLI updates, provider version changes, backend configuration changes, and CI/CD platform migrations all break drift detection scripts. These scripts are never anyone’s primary responsibility, so they break silently and stay broken for weeks.

Where Manual Works Well

If you’re running fewer than 10 workspaces, all in one cloud provider, with a small team — the manual approach is fine. The overhead is manageable, the failure modes are limited, and you don’t need organizational visibility into drift across teams. The economics don’t justify a platform.

Scalr’s Approach: Platform-Native Drift Detection

Environment-Level Configuration

In Scalr, drift detection is enabled per environment, not per workspace. New workspaces inherit the drift detection policy the moment they’re created — there’s no separate configuration step to forget.

This is a meaningful architectural difference. Manual approaches require explicit opt-in per workspace. Scalr’s environment-level model is opt-out — you’d have to deliberately exclude a workspace from drift detection. The default is coverage, not gaps.

No Credential or State Lock Overhead

Scalr already manages provider credentials and state for your workspaces. Drift detection reuses the same credential and state infrastructure that your regular plan and apply runs use. There are no separate service accounts to provision, no additional IAM roles, and no state lock contention — Scalr coordinates drift checks with regular runs so they never conflict.

Centralized Visibility

Detected drift surfaces in a dedicated Drift Detection tab per workspace, separate from regular run history. But the real value is at the organizational level: you can build dashboards that show drift status across every workspace in your organization. Platform teams get a single pane of glass instead of aggregating alerts from dozens of separate scripts.

Slack integration pushes drift notifications to your team’s channel in real time. The notification includes the workspace name and a direct link to review the changes — no log parsing required.

Built-In Remediation

When Scalr detects drift, it presents three actions directly in the UI:

  • Ignore — Acknowledge expected drift and clear the alert, with an audit record of the decision.
  • Sync State — Run a refresh-only operation to update state to match actual infrastructure, without changing any resources.
  • Revert Infrastructure — Trigger a plan and apply to enforce the declared configuration.

With manual approaches, remediation is a separate, disconnected step: you detect drift in your CI/CD pipeline, then switch to a terminal to run commands against the workspace. With Scalr, detection and remediation happen in the same interface, with the same audit trail.

When to Move from Manual to Platform

The inflection point is usually around 15–20 workspaces, or when a second team starts managing infrastructure. At that point, the operational cost of maintaining per-workspace scripts, managing credentials, and aggregating alerts exceeds the cost of adopting a platform. More importantly, the risk of gaps increases — the workspace that nobody remembered to add to the drift detection cron job is always the one that drifts into a security incident.
